Friday 29th September saw Nailsea win their first game of the 2006/7 season against Filton, 51-49. Match report below, or read the Coach’s comments or discuss the game in the forums.

The small Nailsea team featuring only 8 of a possible 12 men came out strong, winning the first quarter 18 - 8. Offensively a combination of explosive drives from captain Jason Boulton and big inside plays from the 6′6 Jon Moore were no match for the younger and physically smaller Filton team. On the other end of the court Nailsea played tough team defense led by basketball veteran Brian Gleeson holding Filton to only 4 baskets.

Second quarter and after a serious talk from the coach the young Filton team started to step up their game and make full use of their bench, keeping legs fresh and running hard. Nailsea continued to look good offensively and defensively and protected their lead going into the half 35 - 24 up.

The second half was a different ball game as fatigue started to take its toll on the smaller Nailsea squad, scoring only 6 points in the 3rd quarter. However this low offensive output was neutralised by their hard work on defense, keeping Filton to 6 points also.

Nailsea led 41 - 30 starting the final quarter and it was do or die time for the home team Filton. They ran hard trying to capitalise on their numbers advantage. Despite a strong push with great support from the fans, Nailsea did enough working the clock and looking after the ball to close out the game winning 51 - 49.

Most Valuable Player went to Jon Moore with 16 points. Paul Roy came second in scoring with 14 points, followed by Jason Boulton with 12.

Nailsea have their first home game of the season on Wednesday 11th October at Nailsea School Sports Hall, where they will host Totterdown. Fans are welcome to come and cheer for their home stars, doors open at 8pm. For more information see the Nailsea Basketball website at www.nailseabasketball.co.uk.
