Nailsea beat Newport 80 - 52

Nailsea played host to Newport Knights on Wednesday 26th October.

Nailsea won 80 - 52 with six team members scoring double figures, top scorer was Nick Oldfield with 15 pts, MVP went to Jon Moore.

Nailsea wins at home; tops league.

Nailsea Basketball’s home success continued on 25 October 2006, playing in front of a large crowd the home team came away with a convincing win over Newport Knights.

The Nailsea side looked stronger from the start, using a combination of big inside play and outside shooting to build an early lead. The physically smaller Newport team had no answer to Nailsea forwards Nick Oldfield and Jon Moore, the big men dominating the paint on offense. On the defensive end, Nailsea locked down the away team, holding them to only 7 points in the quarter.

Going into the second quarter with a double digit lead, Nailsea continued to run the floor well, taking advantage of their deep bench to keep fresh legs on the court at all times. With the crowd cheering on the home side Nailsea’s lead increased throughout the quarter. Brian Gleeson scored baskets on consecutive possessions, extending the lead to seventeen at the half.

After an extended half time break due to a faulty basket Newport came out on fire, narrowing the gap to ten points within the first few minutes of the half, taking advantage of some loose defense to knock down open outside shots. Nailsea soon regained their composure, increasing their intensity on defense to stifle the away side and push the lead past twenty points at the close of the third quarter.

With time running out for the away side, Nailsea’s confidence was evident, Nick Oldfield led six players in double figures with seventeen points, fellow big men Jon Moore and Paul Roy finished with fourteen and twelve points respectively. The home team finished the game with a twenty-eight point lead, their biggest of the season.
