Top Ten of 2006
December 31, 2006 on 5:54 pm | In GeneralWell we’re only hours away from the end of 2006, and in the spirit of the Christmas season it’s time for a list. It’s been a great year for Nailsea Basketball, but I thought I’d go to the trouble of trying to pick out my personal top ten moments of the past twelve months:
10. In their first ever game Nailsea’s answer to Allen Iverson, Jake Watkins, goes off for a game high 26 points against Gwent. Nailsea lost the game, succumbing to a full court defense it wasn’t expecting, but Jakes heroics meant we lost in style!
9. Following a long break from competitive play, Nailsea uses it’s midlands connections to secure a game with a Division 1 team from Leicester. The game was perhaps a little slim on highlights, but there was a rather good night out in Bristol afterwards, Nailsea proving they were a match for Division 1 when it comes to drinking.
8. Nailsea’s first league game! A hungry Nailsea side travelled to Filton and secured a win in its first game where the result actually mattered.
7. The father of Nailsea Basketball, Adam Beaumont, returns from injury to play his first game for the team in Nailsea’s only league loss to date. The result was bad, but seeing “A-Bomb” back on the court was (almost) ample compensation.
6. The 2006 Christmas party sees Nailsea Basketball descend on Pizza Express, Mark Close and Marcus Driver receive joint MVP honours for the evening, and a good time is had by all!
5. After a long drive and only just getting there on time, Nailsea’s player/coach Jason Boulton scorches the Wizards for 27 points including a tough driving layup, plus the foul.
4. In the same game, and receiving the biggest cheer of the night, living legend Mark Close notches his first points for Nailsea. Never one to disappoint in the style stakes “Closer” decides it’d be best to hit a floating layup over the outstretched arms of the Wizards’ toughest defender. Chants of MVP fell on deaf ears…
3. En route to a blowout of the Newport Knights, Nailsea’s John Moore provided the highlight reel play; getting out on the break for a two handed dunk.
2. Holding on for a hard fought win over UWE; a critical victory against Nailsea’s main rivals in the league.
1. What else could head up this list other than the legions of fans attending each of Nailsea’s home games? Nothing, which is why they’re here at number one. Family, friends and WAGs all come together to make the rich cacophony that accompanies every home game, striking fear into the heart of opposing teams and spurring the team onto victory!
So, that’s it then, the moments that have gone into making Nailsea’s first full year such an outstanding success. Don’t agree with me on the ten I’ve chosen? Get on the forum and set me straight! Here’s hoping that 2007 sees Nailsea continuing in the manner to which we are now accustomed, bring on the second half of the season!
Happy New Year!
