Nailsea awarded grant to continue a successful basketball programme
January 13, 2007 on 11:04 am | In GeneralNailsea Town Council has awarded Nailsea Basketball a grant of £1125 for the year 2007/8.
Nailsea Basketball was originally founded in October 2005 by Adam Beaumont to provide basketball training and skills development for young men aged 16+ in the local area. ex-Bath Romans player Jason Boulton delivered weekly basketball coaching sessions with attendances of up to 20 players/week in the first year.
2006 saw the team enter the West of England basketball league, starting their journey in Division 3. From the outset it was clear the team had talent, winning 5 games straight. This talent did not go unnoticed by the local community, home matches were played to the soundtrack of crowds of up to 50 people cheering, chanting and drumming.
Now in 2007 Nailsea Basketball sits proudly on top of the Division with a 90% victory record of 9 wins and 1 loss. The grant from Nailsea Town Council will go towards court hire costs for the 2007/8 season, and also to buy a hi-tech digital scoreboard to replace the currently used ageing flipcharts. This will enable the project to continue being affordable to local youth and provide the basic facilities needed for this growing sport.
