Nailsea School appears to be completely closed due to the snow, so tonight’s training session is cancelled unless you hear otherwise.
Apologies to everyone, I know there was a lot of anticipation for this one!
The WEBAA summer league will be taking place 19th May for 9 weeks (regular season). It has been suggested that Nailsea Basketball enter 2 teams, 1st and 2nd (thereabouts) if the numbers work our right, if not we just mix and match. There will be plenty of chance for minutes in these games and everyone is encouraged to join in.
It will cost £22.50 per person (based on 2 x 8 teams) but may vary dependent on how many sign up. The matches will run Tues and Thurs every week with 2 pools playing on respective nights. Game 1 @ 7pm, 2 @ 8pm, 3 @ 9pm. A T-shirt will also part of the deal.
Please state on the Messageboard discussion if you would like to play, plus preference of night and T-shirt size.
Two friendly games have been arranged for the above dates, times are still to be confirmed but the dates are set.
The first game is away at Clevedon; presumably this will be the side which a depleted Nailsea team of myself, Jon, Matt, Keiran and Simon played during the summer. They are a young side looking to join a league in the near future and it would be fantastic if we could send a good strong team to give them a flavour of what they’ll be facing.
This will be the last chance to get a full game under your belt prior to the season, so a good opportunity to show how ready you are.
See the message board where there is a thread to register your interest in playing!
Game two is away at Bath Academy; this is a team we played once before at Nailsea. It would be good to have enough players that we can actually have a bench, this is an under 18s side so they’re probably pretty quick! This game falls three days after our first league match of the season, so will be a good chance for those of us who don’t get selected for that game to log some minutes in a proper game situation.
As for the Clevedon game there is a thread on the message board to register your availability.
The first game is only just over a week away so let’s get an idea of who’ll be playing ASAP.
The small Nailsea team featuring only 8 of a possible 12 men came out strong, winning the first quarter 18 - 8. Offensively a combination of explosive drives from captain Jason Boulton and big inside plays from the 6′6 Jon Moore were no match for the younger and physically smaller Filton team. On the other end of the court Nailsea played tough team defense led by basketball veteran Brian Gleeson holding Filton to only 4 baskets.
Second quarter and after a serious talk from the coach the young Filton team started to step up their game and make full use of their bench, keeping legs fresh and running hard. Nailsea continued to look good offensively and defensively and protected their lead going into the half 35 - 24 up.
The second half was a different ball game as fatigue started to take its toll on the smaller Nailsea squad, scoring only 6 points in the 3rd quarter. However this low offensive output was neutralised by their hard work on defense, keeping Filton to 6 points also.
Nailsea led 41 - 30 starting the final quarter and it was do or die time for the home team Filton. They ran hard trying to capitalise on their numbers advantage. Despite a strong push with great support from the fans, Nailsea did enough working the clock and looking after the ball to close out the game winning 51 - 49.
Most Valuable Player went to Jon Moore with 16 points. Paul Roy came second in scoring with 14 points, followed by Jason Boulton with 12.
Nailsea have their first home game of the season on Wednesday 11th October at Nailsea School Sports Hall, where they will host Totterdown. Fans are welcome to come and cheer for their home stars, doors open at 8pm. For more information see the Nailsea Basketball website at www.nailseabasketball.co.uk.
As Nailsea School is now using their sports hall as an examination room, Nailsea Basketball has moved to Scotch Horn Leisure Centre.
Training is still on Wednesdays, 8 pm - 10 pm and costs just £3 to play.
Check the forum for the latest news about matches, pickup games and more.
Big thanks to Nailsea Town Council for awarding a grant towards the costs of court hire for the 06/07 season.

Sunday 8th January: Nailsea vs Gwent
This will be our first match: a friendly away game against Gwent Basketball club. It will be helpful for us to gauge how we might do next year in the WEBBA league -Gwent is one of the teams we are likely to face in Division 3.
UPDATE: Final score Gwent 70 Nailsea 64. Check Coach’s corner for a quick review.
Training recommences on Wednesday 11th January 2006 at Nailsea School.
Hope everybody had a good Christmas and New Year -no doubt we’ve all added a few christmas calories to burn!
