Nailsea lose Final Trophy Group Match Away at Police, 68 - 60

Nailsea travelled away last week to face the strong Avon and Somerset Police team. The match took place in Portishead on Wed 13th Feb and saw the Police team take a 68 - 60 victory, despite starting the game 4 points down from the trophy handicaps. Jason Boulton picked up MVP for the Nailsea team, along with a team high 17 points. Noone else on the team made it into double figures, a sign that the offense was a little quiet.

Nailsea Defeat Newport Knights In Trophy, 82 - 77

This was the first game of the Trophy this year where a team starting with a deficit has managed to pull back the points for a victory! Newport Knights from Division 3 travelled to Nailsea on Wednesday 6th Feb to face Nailsea in their 4th match of the Trophy tournament. Despite a 27 head start, Knights were unable to contain Nailsea’s hot offense, consistent fast breaks, and strong defense. The game ended 82 - 77 in Nailsea’s favour after an impressive game throughout. Scoring was lead by game MVP Simon Baker with 20, and Angus Roach with 19.

Nailsea Defeat Div 1 Worle in the Trophy, 81 - 67

Nailsea are back on their winning form thanks to a strong performance against Division 1 side, Worle, on Friday away. The Nailsea team went into the match with a 14 point head start and maintained this throughout the game thanks to a mixture of strong defense and god offensive shooting. The final score ended 81 - 67, but Nailsea had larger leads at points during the game. MVP honours went to Jason Boulton, who had a team high 20 points. Scoring was also backed by Simon Baker with 11.

Nailsea Suffer Slow Start to Trophy Tournament

Nailsea have played their first two games of this year’s trophy tournament over the last fortnight. Last week they faced Division 3 rivals from last year, Totterdown, who were responsible for Nailsea’s only defeat in their first season! The trophy tournament sees point head starts awarded to one team to take into consideration current division positions, and so Totterdown begun the game with a 7 point lead. The final score was 61 - 51 to Totterdown, with Jason Boulton picking up MVP honours and 14 points for Nailsea. This was a difficult start to the group stage of the trophy tournament for Nailsea, with a busy schedule coming up to complete their other games.

Game Stats:

Last night in Nailsea, the team faced Division 3 team, Pirates B, who begun the match with a substantial 38 point head start. While the Pirates team had only 5 players in the game, they played with good strength, and despite periods of excellent defense and intensity, Nailsea were unable to claw back many points. The head start affected the Nailsea team’s mentality, and the game ended with Pirates up 95 - 56. Nailsea player Jake Watkins picked up MVP honours and a team high 16 points.

The trophy tournament continues tomorrow night (1/2/08) with a tough game against Division 1 Worle, away at Hutton Moor Leisure Centre. The trophy then continues with a home match next Wednesday vs Knights, before the final first round match against the A&S Police away, the following Wednesday.

Nailsea Proceed Through Second Round of Cup vs the Wizards, 57 - 56

Nailsea faced a tough Wizards team hot off their recent victory over a division 1 side in the first round of the cup tournament. The score remained close throughout most of the game, but the final result ended 57 - 56 in Nailsea’s favour. Game MVP went again to Jon Moore, who finished the match with a team-high 12 points.

Nailsea Start 2008 with Convincing Victory over Aces, 83 - 53

Nailsea Basketball travelled away on Sunday 6th Jan to play the Aces team they had faced in their first match of the season (and won 92 - 66). The Nailsea team played a strong game and dominated throughout, with the score ending 83 - 53. Scoring was lead by Jason Boulton with 24, and Jon Moore picked up game MVP and a further 12 points.

Nailsea Lose Away at A&S Police, 61 - 67

In a tough rematch against the strong Police team, Nailsea lost the game by a close 61 - 67 points. The match took place at A&S Police HQ in Portishead, and was close throughout. Despite some tough defense, and good inside scoring from Angus Roach (game MVP - 19 points) and Jon Moore; Nailsea could not quite take control of the match in the last quarter. Scoring was also backed by player-coach Jason Boulton with 12 points.

Nailsea Win Again at Home vs Redcliffe, 63 - 60

After losing the last two home games at Scotch Horn, Nailsea played in a hard fought match against Redcliffe on Wednesday 28th November. The game was marked by a strong Nailsea defense, which adapted to play in several different ways, including a full court denial, half court press and various zone set-ups. Adam Beaumont coached the team, and varied the offensive strategy throughout, providing a mix of physical inside play, and outside shooting from the guards.

Player-coach Jason Boulton picked up MVP honours for the game, along with a game high 19 points. Nick Ball followed with 16 points including 2 clutch free-throws in the closing seconds of the game.

Nailsea Win in First Round of the Cup, 45 - 43 vs Empees

Nailsea visited Division 2 rival team, Empees, away in Bradley Stoke on Sunday 18th November. The game itself ended abruptly in the fourth quarter, with approximately 5 minutes left to play. After an unfortunate collision on a fast break, Andy Wilcox from the Empees side took a hard fall into the end wall. The game was halted, and Empees in the end forfeited due to Andy’s nasty injury. At the time, Nailsea had already clawed back from a slow start and large point deficit in the third quarter. The final score was 45 - 43 to Nailsea at the time the game was stopped, with point scoring lead by Jon Moore (10), Paul Roy (9) and Simon Baker (8). Jake Watkins picked up MVP honours, and the game was characterised by tough man to man defense throughout.

The Nailsea team would like to wish Andy all the best and a speedy recovery from the accident. Hope to see you playing again when we next meet!

The Cup Begins This Week For Nailsea Basketball

This Sunday is Nailsea’s first Cup game of the season, being played away against Empees in Bradley Stoke. Tip off is at 7.15pm, supporters always welcome.
